We read that persistence pays off and that nothing difficult has ever been accomplished without persistence.
However, I wonder whether we take the word persistence too far in our actions.
If you phone a prospective client again and again until he or she finally answers and tell you to to go away, is that smart persistence?
What is smart persistence?
Smart persistence consists of defining a goal and then continuing to strive toward that goal without telling yourself that you’ll never achieve it and giving up on it.
Dumb persistence, on the other hand, is being married to tactics that you think will enable you to reach a goal even when it should be obvious to you that they’re not working.
